Who Cares About Origins?

How did the universe come to be? Is there really a creator-god or did eons of time and chance bring everything into being?

Does it really matter? Do the big questions of origins have any impact on our day-to-day lives?

Think about the implications for a moment. If you were to paint a picture or code a computer programme, as the maker, you are entirely free to do what ever you wish with your creation. It belongs to you.

If you were created by an all-powerful, eternal being, it follows that this being owns you.

If you and I are owned, then we are accountable for how we live our lives. It means our opinions about what is right and wrong are irrelevant. Our creator has the ultimate right to set the rules and do whatever they wish with us.

Alternatively, if the entire universe came from nothing then, ultimately, we don’t belong to anyone but ourselves. We are free to live our lives however we choose – so far as we are able. At first, it sounds great, doesn’t it? But it means that your life has no ultimate meaning or purpose and, in the end, has no more inherent value then the dirt under your feet.

The Bible and Christianity begins with a clear answer to the question of origins. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (The Book of Genesis, Chapter 1, Verse 1).

The Bible says we were created, we are owned, we don’t get to set the rules. It starts there and goes on to reveal the great purpose for which we were made.
