Did A Good God Create A Bad World?

You don’t have to live very long to discover that this world can be a cruel place.

Intermixed with the breathtaking beauty of the natural world and the happy moments, all of us have experienced sorrow, suffering, frustration, and disappointment. Then all our lives come to a tragic end in death. Isn’t there a longing in everyone for a better world?

It begs the question, how could a loving God create such a universe?

The Bible reveals that He did not. The world He created was perfect but it’s now broken, it has been cursed.

Mankind was given the joy of looking after God’s perfect world. Instead, humanity rebelled against its Creator (we’ll think about this more next time). As part of our punishment our world was cursed – cursed even to the very ground under our feet.

“…cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

(The Book of Genesis, chapter 3, verses 17 to 19)

But there is hope. Along with the curse, there is a promise that one day perfection will be restored. Suffering, sorrow and death cleared out of paradise for good.

“And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.'”

(The Book of Revelation, chapter 21 verse 5)
