What’s the Big Deal About Sin?

Sin is the breaking of God’s laws.

Today it seems like there aren’t many people about, worrying over sin. We get indignant when we hear of “big” crimes like murder, abuse and theft, but at the same time we cut ourselves some slack and say “nobody’s perfect” when it comes to the “little” stuff.

But our Maker doesn’t see it that way:

You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Jesus, (The Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 5, Verse 48)

In the Bible, God insists on holding us to the standard of perfection. Time and again, He promises that He will judge and punish every sin, no matter how comfortable we may be with it. The very goodness of His character demands that He brings justice on all law breakers.

Herein lies the fundamental problem of the human race. We aren’t perfect but God is and He insists on perfection. The good news of the Bible is that God has provided a solution to this great problem. We will explore this further next time.
